I know it goes on your left hand ring finger (unless you are of the tradition on your left hand ring finger or right hand as some cultures are), but is your engagement ring supposed to be on top of or underneath your wedding ring or does it matter?

I wear my engagement ring on top of my wedding ring because I think it looks better with the particular set that I have. But should it be underneath my wedding ring? Most people I see have their engagement ring underneath their wedding ring.
