Diamonds occur naturally colored due to trace elements in the structure of the diamond. Diamond is pure carbon. White diamonds are graded from D to Z with yellow being at the Z end and this color is caused by nitrogen. Blue Diamonds have boron in the crystal structure. Most of the pink diamonds come from the Argyle mine in Australia.

Diamonds can also be colored by irradiation. Bombarding with electrons in a cyclotron can cause a variety of colors. Also high temerature and high pressure treatment by man can cause color change in diamonds. Treated diamonds are much less expensive than natural. A pink one carat Natural Diamond can cost $250,000. A treated pink is maybe in the $7000 price range.
